In April of 2017, the Catholic Church appointed a “postulator” to investigate the cause for sainthood of Nicholas Black Elk. Known for a mysticism rooted in traditional Sioux religion, Black Elk was also an evangelist for the Catholic faith. Mike Steltenkamp’s two biographies awakened the world to this fuller religious identity of the holy-man. An overview of his life will be presented via lecture and photographs.

Fr. Mike is a Jesuit priest in the Religious Studies Department at Wheeling Jesuit University. His doctoral degree is in Anthropology – his specialization being religion and culture. He has taught at Chippewa Indian College, Saginaw Valley State University, and held chairs at Xavier University in Cincinnati and Loyola of Chicago.
