Day of Reflection and Dialogue on Creating a Culture of Encounter

“An invitation to work for ‘the culture of encoun-ter’ in a simple way ‘as Jesus did’: not only see-ing but looking, not only hearing but listening, not only passing by people but stopping with them…” Pope Francis, Mass at Santa Marta, September 13, 2016

To approach the world in trust that God is active in the communities, hearts, and lives of our neighbors, both near and far. To remain open to the possibility that knowing one another – even and especially those who first seem most unlike ourselves – may change us deeply. These are the seeds that Pope Frances urges us to when he seeks a culture of encounter. Inspired by the story of a relationship built between the after school program at ABLE Families in Mingo County and members of the Islamic Center of South Charleston (West Virginia), this day of reflection explores stories of faith and friendship across differences.
